African Pygmy Hedgehogs can be found throughout East Africa. These types of hedgehogs grow to be about 6 inches long from the tip of nose to the tip of tail and they weigh about 1 pound to 1 ½ pounds. There are different colors available ranging from the average Salt and Pepper color to Snowflakes or Algerians. There are about 15 species of hedgehogs and 6 types of genera.
Hedgehogs are nocturnal but can be changed to diurnal (day) animals. Hedgehogs prefer dry shelter. In the wild, hedgehogs love to burrow. They will burrow into a hole until morning and generally come out in the morning to eat. Hedgehogs will eat up to 1/3 of their weight each night. They are solitary animals and because of this they should be kept alone. Occasionally you can put 2 females together for a small amount of time. Hedgehogs will sleep curled up in a ball or stretched out completely.
